October 23, 2017Tomoko Hokyo solo exhibition – The Secret Garden

Tomoko Hokyo solo exhibition – The Secret Garden ja_049_L ja_050_L “What are living things? What is universe?” Facing up to a simple question I had when I was young, I depicted the world between known and unknown, which connects the past, present, and future. The imaginary world that a young girl feels so real seems to reveal blank space in an ambiguous situation that we often encounter. I am looking forward to you joining me at the exhibition to find out if The Secret Garden, an imaginary world of a young girl, is actually a fiction or reality. During my stay in Kazakhstan where a lotof races and cultures exist, I started to wish that the world will be filled with love and peace. Especially, I would like to represent the voices of children who cannot express their feelings by their own voice, via my artworks. The theme of this solo exhibition is “Love”. All persons are borne with and grow up with love from their parents. “Love” brings “Kindness”, and “Love” makes people “Happiness”. It is my pleasure that if my works with “Love” brings “Kindness” and “Happiness” to all the persons who see my works. In this solo exhibition, I plan to display about 30 artworks, mainly Japanese paintings. I’ll be in the gallery during the whole period. It is highly appreciated if you can visit my solo exhibition when you are available. Sincerely Yours, Tomoko Hokyo

December 07, 2016Solo Exhibition held at Renaissance Atyrau Hotel was completed.

Tomoko Hokyo Solo Exhibition –Destination of Pain/Sadness Breeding- held at Renaissance Atyrau Hotel was completed.
I really appreciated that a lot of people visited my solo exhibition although the outside temperature was really cold.
In this exhibition, I announced my works with new theme which is related to my childhood. I was really glad that a lot of people in Kazakhstan accepts my works with new theme.
After my graduation from university, I worked as an illustrator between 2007 to 2010. Origin of my new works is the works when I was an illustrator, and I challenged that I could mixture Japanese art and Illustration.
I thought that everyone would like to see Japanese traditional style, and apologized that I couldn’t exhibit Japanese traditional style this time, however everyone said to me that “Japan means Animation!”, and felt really glad.
Utilizing precious experience this time, I’ll continue to prepare new works in the future.
Once again, thank you very much for visiting my solo exhibition!

Tomoko Hokyo Solo Exhibition –Destination of Pain/Sadness Breeding-

-Theme of my art-

I express my pain and sadness which I felt during my childhood, considering current difficult situation of modern society at the same time. While desire and hate of human being is increasing, I would like to complain pain and sadness incurred by them through my pictures on behalf of children, animals and plants who cannot speak to them directly. I prepare my works to wish the world would be filled with full of love and peace.

-Introduction of 2nd solo exhibition in Kazakhstan-

I’m pleased to inform that I’ll hold 2nd solo exhibition in the republic of Kazakhstan.

Before holding this solo exhibition, I decided that I would change idiom of my work. One of the reasons of my decision is come from my life experience in Kazakhstan. Previously, I’ve expressed beauty and tradition of Japan through my works. However, during my stay in Kazakhstan, I felt some sense of discomfort toward my works, and found that this feeling is come from my wish that I would like to be a painter who can express the things, not being bound by race or country of individuals, nor “Japanese” style. After finding this feeling, I decided that I focus on “my origin of drawing pictures” considering the first moment when I started to paint in my childhood. Since my memory during my childhood is not the one which was very happy, and it brought me pain and sadness, I had sealed this feeling for a long time. However, I screwed up my courage and came face to face toward this feeling, and it brings me a new motivation to draw pictures.

April 22, 2016Introduction of exhibition “Shinka” by Japanese painter Tomoko Hokyo

To describe Japanese beauty in accordance with “Shinka”

During the last year, there were several serious incidents all around the world. Especially I was terribly saddened by the series of terrorism. To protect cultures, religions and thoughts of each country is understandable, however I feel really sorry to see that a part of persons claim these things by the violence.

I was born and grew up in Japan and continued to make painting during my life. Although my paintings are helpless either to achieve peace or to change the situation of the world, however if the peoples who see my paintings receive a little warm and calm feelings, it becomes really my pleasure, and I would like to try my best to continue to create such good works.

I, Hokyo Tomoko as Japanese painter will hold exhibition at the booth of Yorozu gallery in Art Fair Tokyo 2016. I will exhibit my works which express Japanese beauty by traditional Japanese painting method under the theme of “Shinka”. The Meaning of “Shinka” is “a person/thing who desires to become mature, to blossom in the future”. The homophones of “Shinka” in Japanese language means “glowing up”, especially I expressed “inner growth” of a person in my pictures.

On my paintings, I use natural mineral pigments which are used in Japanese painting through the ages. Natural mineral pigments are painting materials which are made by ground natural minerals. In addition, natural materials like Japanese paper, silk, cake ink, chalk, gold leaf, glue are used for my paintings.

During the exhibition this time, I will exhibit painting of Japanese beautiful women who live during Taisho period (Japanese era just before World War II) and of flower-butterfly (called “Kachoga” which is homophones of traditional Japanese painting of flowers and birds). Total volume of my works will be around 25 pieces from small to large sizes, however due to limitation of space, the displayed works will be changed day by day, please kindly understand the difference between the days.

I’ll be always in my booth during the exhibition. It is my pleasure that I can meet the peoples who visit my booth. In case you have any questions about my works, please do not hesitate to ask me any time.

It is highly appreciated if you can visit my booth and enjoy my works.

Respectfully yours,

Tomoko Hokyo
